The two top seeds in both the Essex County Boys and Girls Basketball Tournaments won their semifinal games to reach next week’s championship final.

On Saturday, at West Orange High School, the second seeded University girls’ team eliminated West Orange, seeded third, in the first game of the four-game set.

This was followed by Immaculate Conception’s victory over Columbia High School (5), in the second girls’ semifinal. Immaculate is the top seed in the girls’ tournament.

So, it will be University facing Immaculate Conception for the championship trophy next Saturday, February 18, 3pm at Essex County College.

Following the two girls’ semifinals the boys took the court. Seton Hall Prep and Immaculate Conception met in a hard-fought, momentum turning contest with Seton Hall, the top seed, prevailing by outlasting Immaculate in the last few minutes. Immaculate was seeded number four.

The final game of the day had Columbia the sixth seed, attempting to upset number two Arts High School. Again, the contest was tight throughout in a low scoring contest with Arts coming out on top.

The boys’ championship game shall be played at Essex County College at 1pm, on the 18th as the first game of a doubleheader with the girls final.
